A Seattleite’s guide to Ferris Bueller’s official day off!
Many people don’t know about the holiday that falls on June 5th. On this day, 32 years ago, June 5th 1985, Ferris Bueller took his legendary day off. For those who don’t know, Ferris Bueller is a character from the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day off directed by John Hughes that was released in 1986. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is regarded as a classic by many and is still a strong symbol of teenage angst. Many students and workers have tried to emulate his epic day off. To make it clear, this blog post is in no way endorsing skipping work or skipping school, but if you happen to have the day off in Seattle on June 5th or any other day, here is a guide on how to celebrate it correctly.
Decide on a Mode of Transportation
Sadly, we don’t all have best friends with dads who own Ferraris. But fortunately, Seattle has amazing public transportation. You can put some dark sunglasses on while on the bus, close your eyes, and pretend you are in a Ferrari! And this way, there is no chances of you crashing a very expensive car. Seattle is a lovely city to walk through, so feel free to grab your walking shoes, but if you want to celebrate correctly, you’ll have to speed walk to make it everywhere.
Make your way to the Columbia Center Observatory
The Columbia Center is the tallest building in Seattle, and the observatory is the highest public observatory in the Northwest! The Bite of Seattle’s sponsor, Groupon, has a sweet deal on tickets right now ($18 for a Sky View Observatory Visit for Two ($28.50 Value). Make sure you visit while this deal is still available.
Get artsy at the Seattle Art Museum
The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) is less than a mile from the Columbia Center Observatory, so there’s no need to drive a Ferrari or take the bus! After a 12 minute walk, you’ll find yourself on 1st Ave at the museum. The SAM is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Tuesdays! If you have a significant other, feel free to bring them along to emulate the romantic scene where Ferris and Sloane kiss (SPOILER ALERT). Or you can just take the time to deeply enjoy the art like Bueller’s friend Cameron!
Bite into Lunch at the Purple Café and Wine Bar
Bueller and his pals enjoy lunch at Chez Quis, so in lieu of visiting a fancy restaurant, go to Purple Café and Wine Bar in Seattle. It’s only a 6 minute walk from the Seattle Art Museum! The Purple Café places a strong emphasis on donating to non-profits and charities, which is why they are a feature in The Bite of Seattle’s Alley. The Alley is a large attraction at The Bite of Seattle that benefits Foodlifeline. On June 5, you can enjoy a cocktail at Purple Café and Wine Bar (if you’re of age). June 5-11, a percentage of select cocktails will support No Kid Hungry. So you can skip a day of work while supporting a great cause! Make sure to visit The Alley during The Bite to get a taste of Purple Café’s Snowcrab Salad on Friday, July 21.
Catch a Mariners game at Safeco Field
There is no Mariners game scheduled for June 5th this year, but to make it a true Ferris Bueller day, you can catch the Cubs game at any local sports bar! There are tons of great bars and restaurants you can see the game at. Don’t get too sucked in while watching the game, because you’ve got to get home before you get caught!
Hurry up! You still have a parade to create!
Yes you read that correctly, in order to fully celebrate the day the last step is to participate in a parade. So you’ll have to make one! So you can use your phone or a boom box (totally 80’s) and walk down the street blasting Twist and Shout by The Beatles! Seriously, who can resist the urge to dance to that song? I assure you that in no time, you’ll gain a crowd to create your own parade!
The last step is to hurry home so that your family and friends don’t realize that you’ve been gone!
